A deal changes the map

On 16 December 2003, Candlelight announced a North American licence covering new and reissued Karmageddon recordings in the United States and Canada. It said Candlelight would coordinate release and promotion from early 2004. The announcement named new records by Morifade, Torture Killer, Hearse, Within Y and Dismember, alongside enhanced reissues involving Septic Flesh, Severe Torture, Aeternus and Nocturnus, as well as the Dimmu Borgir / Old Man’s Child split.

This is a valuable contemporary map of the plan, but it should not be read as proof that every listed title reached every shop exactly as announced. A licensing announcement records an agreement and intention; an edition record or physical copy is stronger evidence for a specific release date, territory, format and label credit.

The often invisible work

A record could therefore have a European Karmageddon edition and a North American Candlelight edition, while the recording itself remained the same. Later reissues could add still more label names to the trail. “Released by” may describe the particular object in a collector’s hand, rather than every stage in the life of the recording.

The agreement also shows that distribution was more than a warehouse service. Candlelight’s announcement paired licensing with promotion and identified specific new records and catalog titles. It gives us a concrete case study of how a Dutch underground label sought access to another market, without supplying sales figures or proving that the deal guaranteed success.
